Fareham Wheelers is already the club called home for many Youth and Junior riders, and we hope to be for years to come! We are a welcoming and encouraging club for all ages and abilities, and we offer a comprehensive range of activities and information to bring out the best in young cyclists, whatever their particular aspirations within the sport. The club is affiliated to many cycling organizations, including British Cycling, where we are recognized as a Go-Ride club, an initiative by British Cycling to make cycling and cycle sport more accessible to young people.
Youth (16 years and under)
Youth riders are any members under the age of 16 on the 1st of January of that year. Fareham Wheelers has many Youth riders of all ages and abilities and interests in cycling, from leisure riders to National champions. We cater well for our Youth riders, they are welcome to our club evenings, Youth and Junior evenings on every last Tuesday of the month, coaching sessions and with parental consent when 14 and over Youth riders are also welcome on the club runs.
The best thing for any youth riders interested to join the club to do is to come down with a parent/guardian if possible to any club evening at Catisfield memorial hall, where we meet from about half 7. You will find a load of cycle enthusiasts more than happy to help or point you in the direction of a club official to help.
Youth riders in the club can benefit from club ties with British Cycling through access to Regional Schools of Racing, a programme of world-class coaching sessions delivered by British Cycling talent development officers, to which we have, continue and look forward to sending riders to.
Junior (16 – 18 years)
Junior riders are between 16 and 18 years of age (though must be 16 or over, and under 18 on the 1st of January for that year) Fareham Wheelers caters well for Junior riders of all abilities and interests in the sport. Our Junior members range from social members who purely enjoy riding a bike with others to those who take part in BMX, audax, touring and sportives to members who compete at local, regional and national levels in various disciplines across the UK – from Track, to Circuit and Road and to Cyclo-Cross.
Junior members are welcomed on our club runs, monthly coaching sessions and our monthly Youth and Junior evenings along with all other club evenings and events. The best move for any prospective Junior members interested in joining Fareham Wheelers and the world of cycling would be to come along to one of our club evenings to see what we’re all about – there will be a load of people more than happy to help talk you through what the club does and point out people in charge of different parts of the club for more in-depth detail.
Activities & Racing
There are many activities that young riders can take part in, such as coaching sessions, club runs (over 14’s, see the club runs page for more info), social events, club nights, youth and junior evenings and workshops, and also racing. Youth and Juniors can take part in circuit races, time trials (over 12’s, see Time Trials), cyclo-cross, track, BMX among others. Please check out our racing pages for detailed instruction on how to start racing.
Fareham Wheelers is also a Go-Ride club, partnering with British Cycling to provide more opportunities for young members. Go-Ride is British Cycling’s development programme for young people. The programme provides a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport and provides a platform to improve bike handling skills. The club runs Go-Ride racing during the summer, which aims to get young people on their bikes without having to register for a license or membership.
