Youth

Fareham Wheelers is already the club called home for many Youth and Junior riders and we hope it will remain that way for years to come! We are a welcoming and encouraging club for all ages and abilities, and we offer a comprehensive range of activities and information to bring out the best in young cyclists, whatever their aspirations within the sport. The club is affiliated with many cycling organisations, including British Cycling, where we are recognised as a Go-Ride club, an initiative by British Cycling to make cycling and cycle sport more accessible to young people.

Age categories

Youth (16 years and under)

Youth riders are any members under the age of 16 on January 1st of that year.

Junior (16 – 18 years)

Junior riders are between 16 and 18 years of age (though must be 16 or over, and under 18 on the 1st of January for that year).

Activities & Racing

There are many activities that young riders can take part in, such as coaching sessions, club runs for over 14’s (see the club runs page for more information), social events, club nights, workshops and racing.

Young riders in the club benefit from club ties with British Cycling through access to Regional Schools of Racing, a programme of world-class coaching sessions delivered by British Cycling talent development officers. We are able run a range of coaching sessions and benefit from being close to the Mountbatten racetrack. We able are to point you in the right direction for local coaching session at Havant & South Downs College.

Many of our Youth and Juniors take part in circuit races, time trials (over 12’s, see Time Trials), cyclo-cross, track, BMX among others. Our young riders take advantage being close to both Goodwood and Thruxton racetracks, which run weekly races on Tuesday night in the summer, Mountbatten on Wednesday night and Winchester park and ride on Sunday mornings in the summer months. During the winter, many riders race at Calshot Velodrome. For more information please check out our racing pages for detailed instruction on how to start racing.

On every other Thursday evening during the summer, we run time trials on local roads around Wickham in which 12’s plus with parental consent can ride in. For more information please check out our time trial page for more details.

Go Ride

Fareham Wheelers is also a Go-Ride club, partnering with British Cycling to provide more opportunities for young members. Go-Ride is British Cycling’s development programme for young people. The programme provides a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport and provides a platform to improve bike handling skills. The club organises Go-Ride racing during the summer, which aims to get young people on their bikes without having to register for a license or membership.

Joining

The best thing for any youth or junior riders interested to join the club, is to come down with a parent/guardian (if possible) to a club evening on a Tuesday at 7.30pm at Catisfield memorial hall. You will find lots of cyclist, who are enthusiastic and more than happy to help or point you in the right direction, talk you through what the club does and introduce you to people in charge of different parts of the club for more in-depth details.

For more information about how to join, please check out our membership page.
