Alan started cycling in 1983 following a motorcycle accident when he lost his right leg below the knee. He started riding with Portsmouth CTC (now Cycle UK) and subsequently joined Fareham Wheelers. In 1990, Cycling Weekly invited him to help establish a Great Britain disabled racing team; Alan participated in track and road racing.
Since experiencing a stroke at the age of 82 he thought his cycling days were numbered. However, 18 months later he started making short rides and discovered the Cycling UK Back on your Bike scheme which provides temporary membership and third-party liability insurance.
